FTP Control Power 4.4

At first glance, I was quite overwhelmed by this program. It's interface is in the style of Windows Explorer but, with all FTP Control's features displayed in the main window, it seemed almost cluttered. After a quick study of the Help index, the confusion subsided and the icons that initially seemed extraneous were actually quite handy. The key features and function of this program are contained in these buttons and are easily accessible, making this program very user-friendly.

Upon opening the program, the main view window appears. The local machine's directory structure is in the left pane and the remote machine's directory structure (once you have specified one) is in the right. Once you have determined your files or folders to be uploaded or downloaded, several options are available. By double-clicking a file it will automatically transfer. I found this to be a nuisance and to cause a lot of mistakes. (I simply turned this feature off in the options menu.) FTP Control supports drag and drop operations which I find is the easiest. But you are not limited to these techniques. By clicking on arrows located between the two windows, you can easily "post", "get", or do either with "special features". Files can be instantaneously zipped and sent, encrypted and sent, or e-mailed as attachments. Just as easily, files can be retrieved and unzipped or unencrypted. Or, if you choose, you can toss your files in "the Hat" and store them until you are ready to use them. Once your files are placed in the Hat, you are even able to perform simultaneous transfers.

FTP Control has script files that you can insert and customize for your needs. This, coupled with the scheduling feature, makes this program extremely useful in automating FTP transfers. Its capacity to automatically reconnect and resume downloads makes FTP Control an exceptionally reliable vehicle for transferring data.

But the thing that really sets FTP Control apart from similar programs is its ability to transfer files from one remote server to another. This eliminates the need to transfer the information to your computer before sending it to the other remote server. This means one less step and a quicker transfer rate since you are not relying on the speed (or lack of) of your Internet connection.

Overall, I am very impressed with FTP Control Power. A multifaceted FTP client, it is a practical tool for any one looking for this type of software.

FTP Control comes in two other versions. FTP Control Lite is a program designed for basic file transfer protocol. The Pro version includes all the elements of FTP Control except its "cross-servers transfer" feature.

Look for a newer version of FTP Control in the next few days!
