At its heart, Amnesia is a typical news reader: Allowing you to connect to USENET server(s), retrieve list of groups, get messages in groups that interest you, and read, post, or reply.

Multi-Platform Support

Amnesia is multiplatform. Currently supported platforms include Linux, Apple Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, SUN Solaris, and other platforms that run Java. For more popular platforms, you will also benefit from platform specific optimizations when viewing images and movies.

Threaded Discussions, Linear Messages, or File Mode

Amnesia can thread discussions, display articles in the original flat mode, or enter a binary mode where the focus is on the binary content.

Anti-Spam & Favorites Features

Amnesia features kill-lists for you to avoid what you dislike and watch-lists to highlight what interests you.

Filters

Amnesia features real-time filters for posts and binary files. Example filters include:

• Limiting messages to a minimum or maximum number of lines
• Filtering based on Read/Unread status
• Displaying files (binary content) that match or do not match wildcard expressions.

Smart Selectable Lists

Binary Newsgroups contain many unrelated posts; some new files, some old files, some damaged files. Amnesia lets you display and select messages anyway you want; and switch on the fly.

Multi-part & Related Binaries

Amnesia automatically detects multi-part files and displays them as one entry. It also features a stream-to-disk functionality that allows it to download a binary of any size w/o requirements for additional memory.

Amnesia also displays missing parts, duplicate parts & collisions, badly sized segments, and automatically relates files, making binary collection easier.

Encodings

Amnesia supports all popular encoding formats for both posting and downloading binary files: yEnc, MIME/Base64, and UUEncode.

File-lists

Probably one of Amnesia's best features, if you own many binary files, you can provide Amnesia with list(s) of files or have it scan your binary directories. Amnesia will then be able to use that information for displaying duplicates, posts using same names, and allow you to browse your collection. File-lists add or enhance many of the features shown on this list.

Names & Reposts Displays

Many common files names are used over and over. Amnesia helps you decide if you need to download the files by displaying such binaries along files you currently own with the same news. You can move your mouse over the icons for information (location, size, etc.) about the files or double click them to display them.

Amnesia will also display a special icon if you have already download the same file (or crossposts of it) or you have downloaded a file with the same name in the near past.

Global Search

Usenet is vast. There around 100,000+ newsgroups of which 30,000 are active. And there is an estimated 400 GB of binaries posted to those groups daily. Amnesia features global search feature that can search those newsgroups in seconds.

Powerful Posting Features

When posting test messages, Amnesia supports email functionality and a full featured Spell checker. For binary postings, it will handle segmenting and posting any number of files, in a series or as individual, unrelated posts for you.

Image & Movie Viewers

Amnesia has a built in viewer for display popular (and nonproprietary) images & movie postings, such as GIF, PNG, JPEG, MPEG, AVI.

Parade & Slideshow

Sadly we should point out that, at the present time, many features of Amnesia (icons, text, spell checker) are tailored for English speaking users.
