S.M.A.R.T. stands for "Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology" It is a system whereby the hard disk has the intelligence to analyse itself and report any problems that could lead to failure and a subsequent loss of data. More information on S.M.A.R.T. can be found at Quantum's web site. SMART Pro enables S.M.A.R.T. on IDE hard disks that support this technology. It then requests the current S.M.A.R.T. status from the hard disk(s). If there is a chance of an impending failure, this is reported and you are encouraged to back up your data and perhaps seek a professional's advice on what to do next : replace or repair the hard disk. All this is done before the operating system loads. In today's 32-bit world, Operating Systems write data to the hard disk as they load. If there is a problem with the hard disk, sensitive data risk being overwritten before you have the opportunity to back them up. When SMART Pro reports an impending failure, you have the choice of booting from a diskette and backing up the data before anything happens. Whether you use a notebook, desktop PC or take care of your company's PCs, you will find that SMART Pro provides an invaluable peace of mind. SMART Pro installs itself in the MBR (Master Boot Record) of your hard disk. It is not compatible with other MBR programs from other software companies except Disk Manager. If you are using EZ-Drive, Bluesky Innovations LLC proposes an alternative called Power Bios Lite that works for large hard drives and is compatible with SMART Pro. If you wish to boot multiple operating systems, Power Boot is also available. Hardware Requirements: 386 or above, Hard disk drive with at least 7 sectors/track. |
