Take Command offers a new approach to working in Windows
or OS/2's Presentation Manager -- an approach that brings
users the "best of both worlds". It is a powerful
command line utility -- fully integrated into the Windows
and OS/2 graphical environments.
Most Windows and Presentation Manager applications offer
limited command-line capability at best, and most
command-line utilities aren't designed for a graphical
environment such as Windows or PM. Those limitations
force users to move back and forth between graphical
utilities and the character-mode command line. By
combining our advanced command-line technology with
the look and feel of Windows or Presentation Manager,
Take Command makes Windows and OS/2 easier and more
productive than ever before.
Take Command supports all the same commands and features
available in 4DOS, 4NT, and 4OS2 -- command line editing,
aliases for frequently used commands, new commands
and options, batch file enhancements, and more --
all in a fully graphical application with a standard
Windows or Presentation Manager interface.
But that's not all. We've also added dozens of features
feasible only in a graphical environment like pull-down
menus, dialogs, application control, and cut and paste
support. If you're tired of having to choose between
the power of the command line and the graphical interface,
Take Command is the perfect solution.
There are three versions currently available: Take Command/16
for use with Windows 3.1 and above, Take Command/32
for use with Windows NT and Windows 95/98, and Take
Command for OS/2 for use with OS/2 3.00 ("Warp")
and above.
Command Line Features:
- Modify and re-execute previous commands with a powerful
command line editor.
- Copy, delete, and rename groups of files and directories,
not just individual ones.
- Change the drive and directory in a single command. Extended
Directory Searches allow you to change to a directory
anywhere on your system by entering only part of its name.
- Quickly locate files or text within files anywhere on your system.
- Built-in file viewer includes scrolling, search, and print capabilities.
- Select or exclude files by date, time, size, and/or extended wildcards for extraordinary flexibility in file management.
- Redefine commands, create new commands for your regular tasks, even assign frequently used commands to a single keystroke.
- Offers complete configuration adjustment in all products, either through interactive dialogs or on the command line.
- File descriptions up to 511 characters long provide information
that can't fit in a filename.
Batch File Features:
- Improved batch language includes subroutines, IF/THEN/ELSE
logic, SWITCH, exception handling, and more than
60 internal commands.
- High-speed batch files run 2-10 times faster than under COMMAND.COM.
- Full-loop control, error handling, and single step operation
for debugging. The new batch file debugger can execute
each line step by step, process or trace into additional
batch files, and display variables, aliases, and
expanded commands at each step.
- Box and line drawing capabilities and colorized text
displays simplify creation of menus and screens.
- More than 60 built-in variables include system configuration,
device status, network drive detection, and free
memory and disk space.
- More than 90 variable functions assist with manipulation
and display of strings, characters, numbers, date
and time, file names, etc.
Windows and Presentation Manager Features:
- Start graphical and character-mode applications with ease
- even run simple console utilities right in the Take Command window.
- Built-in screen scrollback buffer lets you review output
from past commands at any time.
- Customizable toolbar gives you quick access to frequently used
commands and applications.
- Find File dialog lets you search quickly for files or
text, anywhere on your system -- or search from
the command line with the new FFIND command.
- Dialogs, accessible from the Options and Utilities menus,
for editing environment variables, aliases, file
descriptions, and startup parameters.
- New commands such as ACTIVATE, MSGBOX, and QUERYBOX
that allow you to use GUI features and control GUI
applications from your batch files.
